The
AV Group is a member of the pulp and fibre business
of the Aditya Birla Group.
Moving
from an initial partnership beginning 1998 to produce
dissolving rayon grade wood pulp at AV Cell in Atholville, Canada,
the AV Group has acquired another pulp mill,
St. Anne Nackawic in New Brunswick, Canada, in 2006, now christened
AV Nackawic.
AV
Cell Inc.
This
operation gives the Group access to good quality
softwood / hardwood pulp, a critical input for its
viscose staple fibre (VSF) business. The mill, whose
entire production is exclusively for the Group's
captive consumption, supplies 119,000 tonnes of
dissolving grade chemical pulp to its VSF units
in India, Thailand, Indonesia and China. Tembec
Inc, a leading integrated forest product company
in Canada retains a nominal 5 per cent holding.
AV
Nackawic Inc.
AV Nackawic Inc is located on the shores of the St. John River in the community of Nackawic, New Brunswick, Canada, west of the capital city of Fredericton. The AV Nackawic facility was purchased by the Aditya Birla Group on 9 November 2005 and restarted in January 2006 as a 750-ADMT per day hardwood kraft pulp mill.
AV Nackawic uses Vis-CBC technology for producing dissolving pulp in its kraft mill. It is the first mill to be successful at using the Vis-CBC process for DG pulp using maple, aspen and birch.
The first sheet of dissolving grade pulp was produced on 25 August 2008. Currently the mill produces 180,000 tonnes per annum of dissolving pulp. This high-purity alpha cellulose is supplied to the viscose plants of the Aditya Birla Group in India, Thailand and Indonesia, for the manufacture of rayon used in textile application. AV Nackawic is supported by an on-site chemical plant to meet the bleaching chemical demand, caustic, sodium chlorate and hydrochloric acid required for pulping.
